BITTON PARISH REGISTER TRANSCRIPT (Ref: 103) by P.W.P Carlyon-Britton Early   parish   registers   are   notorious   for   being   difficult   to   read   due   to   the   style   of   the   writing      and damage   caused   through   being   kept   in   damp   wooden   chests   for   three   or   four   hundred   years. A   very large   number   of   water   damage   and   it   is   not   unusual   the   mice   to   have   feasted   upon   the   volumes.     For   this   reason   transcripts   that   were   made   at   the   end   of   the   nineteenth   century   and   beginning   of the   twentieth   are   so   important.   They   were   compiled   from   the   original   register   (as   opposed   to   poorly filmed   copies)   and   more   importantly   most   were   compiled   by   scholars   who   were   able   to   read   and understand the script of this time. Fully searchable and Indexed  This particular transcript covers the following; Baptisms 1572 to 1674 Marriages 1571 to 1674 Burials 1572 to 1668 £5.00 including UK Postage       £6.50 including Overseas Postage
TRANSCRIPTION OF POOR BOOK OF THE TITHINGS OF WESTBURY-ON-TRYM, STOKE BISHOP AND SHIREHAMPTON 1656 TO 1698 (Ref: 101) By H. J. Wilkins This   book   deals   with   an   unsettled   period   of   English   History,   for   it   runs   from   1656   to   1698   which   is   a period   that   embraces   part   of   the   Protectorate   (1653   to   1659),   the   restored   Commonwealth   (1659), the   reign   of   Charles   II   (1660   to   1685)   the   reign   of   James   II   (1685   to   1688)   and   William   and   Mary   to 1689. As   with   all   “Poor   Books”   it   deals   with   the   income   and   disbursement   to   the   poor.   There   are   many hundreds   of   people   listed   either   as   paying   the   poor   rate   or   receiving   payments   and   will   be   of   great interest   to   those   studying   the   area   or   with   ancestors   in   these   parishes.   There   is   no   index   but   it   is fully searchable £5.00 including UK Postage       £6.50 including Overseas Postage

A HISTORY OF THE PARISHES OF MINCHINHAMPTON AND AVENING by Arthur Twisden Playne B. A In   the   introduction   the   author   states   that   he   has,   “always   thought   that   some   account   should   be written   of   every   Parish,   to   supplement   the   County   Histories,   which   can   naturally   only   deal   with main   facts,   and   there   is   scarcely   a   Parish   in   England   which   does   not   possess   some   features   of interest worthy of record”, and his work supports this theory. This   is   a   well   written   book   that   covers   all   aspects   of   the   history   of   the   parish.   He   gives   great   detail of   the   local   trades   and   occupations,   as   well   as   historical   events   concerning   the   parishes,   ranging from   payments   by   the   Churchwardens   for   bats   legs,   the   local   church   and   manor   to   church   pews for the dogs “from the Hall” A   really   interesting   read,   particularly   if   you   have   an   interest   or   connection   with   either   of   the parishes. £5.00 including UK Postage       £6.50 including Overseas Postage
