THE CHARTIST RIOTS  AT NEWPORT 1839 (092) Published by W. N. Johns The   Newport   Rising   of   1839   in   an   important   event   in   British   history   as   it   was   the   last   large-scale armed   rebellion   against   authority   in   mainland   Britain.   On   4 th    November   of   that   year   somewhere between   1,000   and   5,000   Chartist   sympathisers   which   included   many   coal-miners,   the   majority with   home-made   arms   marched   on   the   town   of   Newport,   Monmouthshire,   intent   on   releasing fellow Chartists who were reported to have been taken prisoner in the town's Westgate Hotel. THE DIARY OF WALTER POWELL OF LLANTILIO CROSSENNY (097) Walter   Powell   was   the   son   of   Thomas   Powell   of   Penrhos   was   born   in   1581.   The   diary   begins   with extracts   from   the   parish   register   relating   to   the   family   of   his   first   wife   Margaret.   The   diary   itself covers   the   years   from   1603   to   1654   and   is   filled   with   many   personal   and   local   events   as   well   as   the odd national event being noted.
