Harper This   is   a   wonderful   publication   of   over   three   hundred   pages   giving   a   details   description of   the   Somerset   Coastline   from   the   River   Avon   to   the   border   of   Devon.   Not   only   does   it give   geographical   details   but   also   literary   and   historical   connections   associated   with   the coast the towns along its length with a number of lined illustrations. MARRIAGE ALLEGATION BONDS OF THE BISHOPS OF BATH AND WELLS FROM THEIR COMMENCEMENT TO THE YEAR 1755 By Arthur J. Jewers (Ref 030) First   published   in   1909   this   book   lists   all   of   the   surviving   bonds   for   that   year.   Since   then   a number   of   original   documents   have   been   lost   or   have   deteriorated   to   make   this   the   most complete   list   of   this   bonds.   Most   are   for   the   early   1700's,   although   there   are   a   number   of entries   for   the   previous   century.   To   use   Jewers   own   words   in   describing   the   period   1674- 75   “in   these   years   large   portions   are   quite   gone,   partly   eaten   by   mice   and   partly   rotted away   by   damp”.   These   circumstances   make   this   work   of   over   500   pages   invaluable   for family and local historians.  £6.00 including UK Postage       £7.50 including Overseas Postage
THE SOMERSET MUSTER ROLL OF 1569 (Ref 085) First published by the Somerset Record Society in 1904 On   March   26th   1569   ,   due   to   the   threat   of   Spanish   forces,   the   Privy   Council   issued   a directive to the counties to hold a general muster of all men over 16 Certificates   of   the   muster,   with   the   names   of   the   men   and   their   equipment,   were   to   be returned by July 1st though this was later extended to August 12th This CD contains a searchable transcript for Somerset of this Muster. £6.00 including UK Postage       £7.50 including Overseas Postage
THE SOMERSET PROTESTATION RETURNS and LAY SUBSIDY ROLLS 1641-42 (Ref 083) Transcribed by A. J. Howard Edited and Published by T. L. Stoate In   the   year   of   1641   it   was   demanded   that   every   man   over   the   age   of   18   should   make   an oath   was   to   follow   the   “true   Protestant   religion”.   These   are   now   called   the   Protestation Returns and form a valuable list of inhabitants of a parish at this time. Not   everyone   signed   and   those   who   did   refuse   are   also   sometimes   noted.   Whilst   only about   a   third   of   Somerset   parishes   have   survived   (   161   )   it   still   lists   over   22,000   names and   is   an   important   Somerset   reference   work   which   will   be   of   great   use   to   Genealogists and Family Historians. It   is   in Adobe Acrobat   format   and   so   can   be   easily   searched   and   read   on   most   computers. THE PREPARATIONS IN SOMERSET AGAINST THE SPANISH ARMADA1558 - 1588 by Emanuel Green (Ref 052) First   published   in   1888   this   wonderful   book   is   a   comprehensive   guide   of   the   preparations made   in   the   county   for   the   expected   invasion   of   England   by   the   Spanish   in   the   sixteenth century.      In   addition   to   this   many   hundreds   of   names   are   given   in   the   various   returns   that were   made   during   this   period. The   amount   of   information   these   contain   varies   from   just   a name   and   the   hundred   to   a   full   entry   such   as   “Francis   Lawley   one   light   horseman   named Symon   Hill   sufficientlye   furnished   as   aforesaid”   An   excellent   publication   for   the   Family, Social and Local Historian.
