THE PARISH OF SELWORTHY Some Notes on its History (Ref 146) by Frederick Hancock The   subtitle   of   “Some   Notes   on   its   History”   does   not   do   this   book   justice   in   that   it   is   over three   hundred   pages   and   has   been   thoroughly   researched   by   the   author,      task   that   must have    taken    many    years    to    complete.       There    are    chapters    on    the    Manors,   Ancient Chapels   in   the   Holnicote   Valley,   Selworthy   Registers,   parish   accounts   and   many   other subjects   of   interest   to   the   family   and   local   historian.      This   CD   is   an   ideal   companion   to Selworthy   Parish   Records   Transcripts   by   T.   L.   Stoate   available   on   the   Parish   Registers page. THE WOOLLEN MANUFACTURE AT WELLINGTON, SOMERSET (Ref 143) by Joseph Hoyland Fox The   woollen   trade   has   always   been   important   in   England   and   has   played   a   great   part   in the   economy   of   the   West   Country      particularly   in   the   area   around   the   Somerset   and Devon   borders   where   there   were   a   number   of   Mills   from   which   a   lot   of   this   cloth   was exported.      The   English   Civil   War   was   damaging   to   the   whole   economy   and   in   particular the   textile   trade,   so   much   so   that   during   the   reign   of   Charles   II   an   act   of   Parliament   was passed   with   required   that   the   dead   be   buried   in   pure   English   wool   and   a   affidavit   be produced   to   show   this.   The   only   exceptions   to   this   were   the   destitute   and   plague victims. This   book   gives   a   superb   account   of   the   day   to   day   running   of   woollen   production   in   the area   compiled   from   records   of   the   Fox   family   who   were   major   producers   for   well   over three   hundred   years.   If   you   have   an   ancestor   who   was   involve   in   the   trade   it   is   very likely   that   they   might   have   worked   for   this   family   in   some   capacity   or   the   other.   The book    will    also    be    of    great    interest    of    anyone    involved    in    local    history.    Indexed, bookmarked and searchable. £4.00 including UK Postage       £5.50 including Overseas Postage
