Norway with illustrations by Joseph Pannell and Hugh Thomson (ref: 009) This   book   was   published   in   1897   and   is   a   superb   guide   to   these   two   counties.   It   gives   an accurate   and   interesting   description   of   the   various   towns   and   villages   with   contemporary antidotes.   History   is   not   forgotten   and   a   large   portion   of   each   chapter   is   devoted   to   the historical   facts,   which   is   written   in   a   such   a   way   as   to   make   it   very   enjoyable   reading.     There are almost four hundred pages with numerous illustrations. Knight (Ref 014) Published   around   1895   this   book   is   a   typical   topographical   and   historic   guide   of   that   time with   its   “flowery”   descriptions. A   very   informative   and   pleasant   read   with   chapters   relating to   Clovelly,   Dartmoor,   Winsford,   Brean   Down   and   The   Mendips   to   name   just   a   few.   With well   over   250   pages   and   a   great   number   of   illustrations   this   is   a   CD   that   anyone   who   has an interest in the West Country cannot afford to be without.  £5.00 including UK Postage       £6.50 including Overseas Postage

THE MINES OF CORNWALL AND DEVON Statistics and Observations byThomas Spargo (Ref 029) This   book   published   in   1865   is   a   must   for   anyone   who   has   an   interest   in   the   counties   of Cornwall   and   Devon.   It   goes   into   great   detail   regarding   the   history   and   statistics   of hundreds   of   mines,   from   the   name   of   the   manager,   landowner,   depth   of   the   adit,   when first   opened   and   many   other   pieces   of   useful   information.     Although   the   title   page   states that   there   are   Maps,   Plans   and   Sections,   these   were   either   removed   before   digitization or   never   included   in   the   book.   However,   despite   this   it   still   remains   one   of   the   most complete   listings   of   mines   and   of   great   use   to   scholars   of   this   subject,   or   for   anyone looking to add detail to their family history.  £5.00 including UK Postage       £6.50 including Overseas Postage

REMINISCENCES AND REFLECTIONS OF AN OLD WEST-COUNTRY CLERGYMAN by W.H.Thornton (Ref 080) This   book   was   originally   published   for   private   circulation   in   1897   and   whilst   diaries   were   very popular   around   this   time,   this   is   more   of   an   autobiography   which   gives   a   well   described   picture of   the   life   of   a   clergyman   from   the   middle   to   end   of   the   nineteenth   century   in   Devon   and   on   the border   of   Somerset.   Whilst,   as   expected,   he   was   well   acquainted   with   local   members   of   the gentry,   we   also   have   a   vivid   descriptions   of   some   of   the   more   unfortunate   members   of   his   “flock” such as Mr. Phelps who was described as a “broken down , melancholy man”. In   addition   to   telling   the   story   of   his   life   he   also   devotes   complete   chapters   to   “Sport”   and “Horses”.   An   excellent   book   for   local   and   social   historians   as   well   as   those   carrying   out   family history research.
