In   time   when   gold   and   silver   was   in   short   supply   the household   was   supplied   with   provisions   supplied   by   the sovereign’s   demesnes.      This   book   gives   an   excellent explanation   of   the   “tax”   and   then   follows   a   listing   of   all   of those   who   had   to   contribute,   which   appears   to   have been   most   households   in   the   villages   that   fall   within   the hundreds.    .    Listing    householders,    landholders    and tenants   this   is   a   superb   look   at   the   various   villages   and their    occupants.    Payments    were    made    by    way    of money,     wheat     or     poultry.          Thomas     Franklin          of Ecchinswell    was    assessed        at    one    pullet    and    at Baughurst   Richard   Wither   was   assessed   one   goose.
