CORNWALL HEARTH AND POLL TAXES
1660 - 1664
by T. L. Stoate
The Reign of Charles II was exceptionally rich in the number and
variety of taxes directly assessed on individuals. Of all these taxes
only the hearth tax and earlier monthly assessments were the names
of the taxpayers specifically required to be returned to the
Exchequer. This CD is a transcript of some of the surviving returns
for Cornwall which were first published by T. L. Stoate.

CORNWALL SUBSIDIES IN THE REIGN OF HENRY VIII
1524 and 1543 and The Benevolence of 1545
Edited by T. L. Stoate
For hundreds of years the King, Queen or Government has needed
to raise money for various enterprises, usually wars. In the distant
past, as today, it was the people of the country that had to find this
money usually in the form of taxes, subsidies etc. Whilst these taxes
were not welcomed by the people, they are a valuable asset for the
historian today, as lists were usually kept of those who paid.
This CD has the lists for Cornwall for the years of 1524, 1543 and
1545 with many thousands of names and is fully searchable as well
as having an index.

THE CORNWALL MILITARY SURVEY OF 1522
with the
LOAN BOOKS AND TINNERS MUSTER OF 1535
Edited by T. L. Stoate
In 1522 Wolsey, Henry VIII's chancellor, was badly in need of
money to finance the war with France . A subsidy in 1514 failed to
raise the expected amount and had to be repeated in 1515 and 1516.
He was planning another subsidy and it is presumed that he did not
think that satisfactory assessments would be made for it. He
therefore ordered a new and extensive survey of the wealth of the
country both spiritual and temporal, together with a military muster
which he gave out to be the reason for the survey - that it was to
determine the rate at which men were to be assessed for the
provision of armour - something that was not to be regarded as very
onerous. In reality he had determined to use it as the basis for an
immediate loan and for a subsidy which was to follow.
This CD contains a transcript of that survey, the loan books and

CORNWALL PROTESTATION RETURNS 1641
edited by
T. L. Stoate
In the year of 1641 it was demanded that every man over the age of
18 should make an oath was to follow the “true Protestant religion”.
These are now called the Protestation Returns and form a valuable
list of inhabitants of a parish at this time. Not everyone signed and
those who did refuse are also sometimes noted. This important
Cornish reference work contains some 30,000 names given in 5
boroughs and 197 parishes out of a total of 204 and will be of great
use to Genealogists and Family Historians. It is in Adobe Acrobat
format and so can be easily searched and read on most computers. A

CORNWALL MANORIAL
RENTALS AND SURVEYS
edited by T. L. Stoate
The Public Record Office List and Index vol, 25 catalogues
manorial rentals and surveys and other documents in its possession.
Cornwall is well represented in this catalogue, due to some extent to
the existence of the Duchy, The two most important items in the list
have already been published, namely the 1337 Caption of Selsin and
the 1650 Parliamentary Survey both dealing with all the Duchy
manors in Cornwall,
This present work is an attempt to complement these by giving
many of the remaining items in the List and Index catalogue,
including, it is hoped, all the most important ones.
