CORNWALL
by
Arthur L. Salmon
A satisfactory guide-book must not be exclusively architectural, or
historic, or legendary, or scientific ; it must aim at being all. In
Cornwall such breadth of treatment is particularly needed. Cornwall is
like no other English county. Its nearest resemblance in England will
be found in Devon ; parts of Ireland are equally or more similar. But
there are features in Cornwall not to be found elsewhere. One special
point is the hagiology. In most counties it is enough to say of a church
that it is dedicated to St. Paul or to St. James ; in Cornwall it is not
enough to say that a church is dedicated to St. Sennen, or St. Feock, or
St. Gwinear. Readers will want to know who these saints were. The
names sound strangely unfamiliar. Even when we meet a dedication to
St. Paul, we must be careful not to conclude hastily that the great
Apostle of the Gentiles is referred to. Cornish dedications are entirely
Celtic.
A fine book packed with information relating to Cornwall.

THE MINES OF CORNWALL AND DEVON
Statistics and Observations
by
Thomas Spargo
This book published in 1865 is a must for anyone who has an
interest in the counties of Cornwall and Devon. It goes into great
detail regarding the history and statistics of hundreds of mines,
from the name of the manager, landowner, depth of the adit, when
first opened and many other pieces of useful information.
Although the title page states that there are Maps, Plans and
Sections, these were either removed before digitization or never
included in the book. However, despite this it still remains one of
the most complete listings of mines and of great use to scholars of
this subject, or for anyone looking to add detail to their family
history.

CORNISH WORTHIES
Volumes 1 and 2
Published in 1884 this set of two volumes contains, what is
described by the author as being "Sketches of Some Eminent
Cornish Men and Families". Describing them as being sketches is
rather doing an injustice to his work, as most are exceptionally
well researched and not at all lacking in detail.
Some of those mentioned are The Arundells, William Borlase,
Davy and Mrs Boscawen to name just a few.
For those who had an interest in Cornwall, its families and history
this book in CD form is a very welcome addition to any collection.
