THE MYNSTER ON THE ILE
or
The Story of the Ancient Parish of Ilminster, the one Royal Peculiar in
the County of Somerset
by
James Street M.A.
Published in 1904 this is probably the most complete history of
Ilminster ever written which certainly has not been bettered since this
date. In his preface the author “professes neither antiquarian learning
nor literary finish: but he thinks he can distinguish that which interests
ordinary folk; and claims to have discovered a wealth of interesting
matter, connected with the history of the town of which he has been
Vicar”.
Starting with the coming of the Normans it continues to the late
nineteenth century, with the Churchwardens Accounts Henry VIII -
Edward VI printed in full, sections on the Black Death, Nonconformity,
Monmouth and many others, makes this rare book on CD, with over
four hundred pages, invaluable for historians and genealogists alike.
