Somerset Family History and Local History Books on CD
ABSTRACTS OF SOMERSET WILLS
Collected by Rev. Frederick Brown
Originally Published by F. A. Crisp
One night in 1942, Somerset and Devon lost one of the most important
research sources for local and family historians, when a German bomb
destroyed the Exeter Probate Office, and all of the wills that it contained.
This being the case collections of transcripts and extracts of wills are so
important to those of us with connections to these counties.
One of the most important sources for Somerset is the collection of
abstracts that was made by the Reverend Frederick Brown at the end of
the 19th century, these were published in six volumes between 1887 and
1890 by Frederick Crisp. Only one hundred and fifty sets were ever
produced and their rarity is reflected in the price of those that do
occasionally come up for sale.
This CD contains digitised version of all six volumes, that is fully
searchable and will prove invaluable to anyone studying the local or their
family history in Somerset.

THE
SOMERSET PROTESTATION RETURNS
and
LAY SUBSIDY ROLLS 1641-42
Transcribed by A. J. Howard
Edited and Published by T. L. Stoate
In the year of 1641 it was demanded that every man over the age of 18
should make an oath was to follow the “true Protestant religion”. These are
now called the Protestation Returns and form a valuable list of inhabitants of
a parish at this time. Not everyone signed and those who did refuse are also
sometimes noted. Whilst only about a third of Somerset parishes have
survived ( 161 ) it still lists over 22,000 names and is an important Somerset
reference work which will be of great use to Genealogists and Family
Historians. It is in Adobe Acrobat format and so can be easily searched and
read on most computers. A must for anyone with Somerset Ancestors.
