Somerset Family History and Local History Books on CD
IN TAUNTON TOWN
by
E. Everett-Green
A Story of the Rebellion of
James Duke of Monmouth
Published in 1901 this is a story revolving around the Battle of
Sedgemoor through the eyes of one Dicon Snowe who was born on a
farm between Bridgwater and Taunton.
All too often, when researching, we are just given the dry facts
without the story behind them and the effect that they had on the
ordinary population. Whilst not one hundred percent factually correct
this publication is ideal for those who enjoy a good story that is based
on historical information and an excellent way to understand the effect
of this uprising had locally. A superb read. Fully Searchable

THE MARCH OF WILLIAM OF ORANGE THROUGH
SOMERSET
With a notice of other local events in the time of
King James II A.D. 1688
by
Emanuel Green
In 1671 Charles II's brother James, Duke of York, startled the nation by
announcing that he was a papist. This caused a great concern among the
Protestants and many attempts were made to stop James from becoming
King.
In February 1685 Charles died and despite the attempts to exclude
James, he was crowned King. Later that year the Duke of Monmouth
made an unsuccessful attempt to take the throne. Eventually in 1688
William was “invited” to invade England and he eventually landed at
Brixham in Devon.
This publication gives an excellent account of the progress of William
through Somerset by the use of letters and documents gathered from
various sources by the author. A useful book in any collection of
Somerset

MEMORIALS OF OLD SOMERSET
editied by
F. J. Snell
“THE object of this volume is to provide a conspectus of the principal
historical and archaeological interests of the county of Somerset. These,
however, are so rich and varied that the Editor has found it beyond his
power to include between its covers all the attractive topics that might be
treated. Still, the work, if not actually encyclopaedic, is fairly
comprehensive, and its scope is certainly wider than that of any similar
publication, while it is far more authoritative.
The different writers have attempted to deal with their subjects in a
literary, as well as scientific, spirit. Nothing has been assumed that a
person of good education may not be reasonably expected to know ; and,
conversely, as the writers, in most instances, are either well-known
authorities or particularly acquainted with their respective subjects, it
may be confidently anticipated that the results of their labours will be to "
make the bounds of knowledge wider yet," even for those residents
possessing an antecedent familiarity with some of the topics.”

SOMERSET HISTORICAL ESSAYS
b y
J. Armitage Robinson
The writer of these pages makes no claim to be a historian, but he is
concerned with the materials which go to the construction of true
history. Occasionally he is led to revise the verdicts of historians on the
ground of a renewed investigation of some isolated problem, or in the
light of fuller information which has but lately become available.
Essays include
William of Malmesbury
The Saxon Abbots of Glastonbury
The First Deans of Wells
Early Somerset Archdeacons
Peter of Blois
Bishop Jocelin and the Interdict

First published in 1860 this book is probably one of the most informative
written on the subject. The Priory of St. Peter and St Paul was founded as
an Augustine establishment circa 1115 by William Gyffarde the Bishop
of Winchester and has had a rich history which this excellent book
describes fully.
